Balloons are a fun way to celebrate special occasions, but many Wellingtonians aren't aware of the impact that helium-filled balloons can have on their electricity supply.
The metallic coating found on many helium balloons conducts electricity extremely well and can cause a short circuit if it comes into contact with power lines. This can result in an outage, power surge, damage to equipment, and other safety issues.
In February 2024 alone, 2,000 homes and businesses across Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua were impacted by power outages caused by helium balloons.
Watch what can happen when balloons meet power lines:
So, have fun celebrating – just make sure you keep helium balloons far away from power lines!
Safety tips
* If celebrating outdoors, make sure you secure and weigh down helium balloons. Don't release them outside.
* Don’t celebrate with balloons under power lines or close to substations.
* Deflate balloons after the party and dispose of them properly (foil balloons aren't biodegradable).
* Never try to retrieve a balloon, kite, or anything else tangled in a power line. Leave it alone and call us straight away on 0800 248 148.
Remember: A person doesn’t need to be touching a power line directly to be electrocuted. Objects like balloons and their strings can become electrified and shock anyone touching them, and high voltage electricity can JUMP.
