There are times when you will need to arrange for electricity to be temporarily or permanently disconnected.
There are two main types of disconnections. In both cases, please contact your electricity retailer to arrange this.
Permanent Decommission
This is a total decommission of the power supply at the boundary of a property (sometimes referred to as a Total or Permanent Disconnection), generally for house removal or demolition.
For overhead connections one of our contractors will remove the fuse and disconnect the service cable from the pole and removed it from site. For underground connections one of our contractors will remove the fuse from the pillar and the cable to boundary will be dug up and removed. Both overhead and underground connections will then have the supply tested to ensure it is no longer live.
Temporary Disconnection
This is a temporary disconnection only, generally for house maintenance including painting, re-roofing and spouting. One of our contractors will pull the fuse at the pole or pillar to disconnect the power supply to the house. They will leave a tag to ensure any other Utility provided is alerted to our actions. Then when the maintenance work has been completed, we will return to reinstate the fuse in the pole or pillar and remove the tag.
- This free service is available on weekdays only. Please request a quote if you need a temporary disconnection on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday.
- We'll need at least three working days notice to carry out a temporary disconnection (unless we need to provide a quote – in which case, it will be longer).
- You'll need to be present when we attend.
Free Safety Disconnection Service for residential consumers
- Repairs to roofing, spouting, painting, water-blasting, tree-trimming and scaffolding can be dangerous if carried out close to overhead service lines (the lines connecting your property to the lines and poles in the street.
- Call your electricity retailer to have the power temporarily disconnected when working near overhead service lines.
- For your safety you can arrange for a free power disconnection (isolation) of your service line while you carry out the work.
